Dance Positions and Holds

Modeled below are some of the dance holds and positions used in Scandinavian folk dance.  A gentle firmness in the arms and hands makes for easier coordinated turning and leading and following.  The body is kept flexible with the knees usually slightly bent.

Many of these dances originally developed in rural or mountainous regions.  The physical stamina, coordination and agility used in active outdoor work facilitated development of the dances.  Today, doing the dances develops the body in ways that make outdoor hobbies easier, and vice versa.
