You should be too!\n \nInstructors\nWe are proud to announce that our teachers this year are Daniel Sandu and Anna Angelova. \nDaniel Sandu\nDaniel Sandu Daniel Sandu was born in Bucharest in 1967 and began dancing with Romanasul ensemble at age six. As a child\, he accompanied the Romanian delegation to a world dance ensemble in Cuba (1978)\, and at age 18 became a professional dancer with Rapsodia Romana (1985) in Bucharest. \nSince 1992 he has danced with Het Internationaal Danstheater in Amsterdam. He obtained a bachelor of dance education degree in 2003 from the Rotterdamse. \nA fulltime resident of the Netherlands\, he is currently on staff at the folk dance house\, Terpsichoré\, in Amsterdam\, where his course “Rhythm\, Romania\, Roma” (3R) ranks among their most popular offerings. Read more… \n\nAnna Angelova\nAnna Angelova Anna grew up in a small town in Northern Bulgaria where the lively local festivities (sabors) and traditional ceremonies kindled her interest in folklore at an early age. Anna’s dance adventures started when she joined the town’s folk dance ensemble where she learned from esteemed choreographers and performed along experienced dancers throughout her youth years. \nUpon coming to the United States to further her education\, Anna was introduced to the internationally acclaimed Ahmet Lüleci’s Collage Dance Ensemble: a unique experience that unlocked passion and appreciation for the greater Balkan magic and beyond. The eight years Anna spent performing with Collage on local and national stages were instrumental for her growth as a dancer – from professional attitude to stage presence to polished style to authentic connection with our ancestors through Ahmet’s vibrant choreographies. In 2022\, Anna was honored to teach Bulgarian Dance at Ahmet’s annual World Camp in Rock Hill\, New York. SUMMARY:Cafe Shalom Dance Party
DESCRIPTION:Israeli folk dancers from all over the Bay Area dance the night away at Café Shalom’s Saturday party—a monthly tradition since the 1960s! We play a wonderful mix of oldies and the latest dances based on requests. Dancers of all ages are invited to join the fun on the third Saturday of every month.  \nSaturday classes are large parties with many dancers from all ages and spectrum. We dance dances from 1918 and from 2018 back to back. \nThe first part of the evening – 30-45 minutes starts with slow and beginners dances\, oldies\, and dances which we learn in Tuesday class. Drop into our Saturday party and we’ll tell you how to purchase the music and video packages from the Presenters. \nFeatured Guests\nTineke van Geel\nTineke Van Geel \n In 1977 Tineke van Geel received her degree as folk dance instructor. She specializes in Armenian dance and works as a choreographer. Tineke conducts workshops for students at various levels\, beginners to professional\, and has taught classes in international folk dance\, Dutch and Armenian dances in many countries around the world. Her main focus is to break down complicated steps and movements to basic elements and slowly ‘rebuilding’ them to the original dance form. This skill is part of her worldwide success and is combined with a vast knowledge of Armenian dance and culture. \nSince 1985 she has regularly visited Armenia to study folklore at the Pedagogic Institute and Choreographic School in Yerevan. A part of each research trip was devoted to working with several amateur groups in Armenia and doing research on costumes. Two of those research trips were sponsored by the Dutch government. On several occasions Tineke visited the USA to observe the dances performed by the Armenian communities there. Read more… \nMaurits van Geel\nMaurits Van Geel \n Maurits was artistic director of the professional Dutch dance performance group The Internationaal Danstheater for 24 years. During this interval\, the group performed 47 different evening shows. Part of this job involved several months of dance research each year in order to prepare for these programs. \nMaurits has traveled extensively in his dance research that has emphasized the Roma culture and those in the Caucasus. These travels have included India\, Pakistan\, Turkey\, Russia\, England\, France\, Armenia\, Azerbaijan\, Georgia\, Ossetia\, Dagestan\, and Cherkassy. He has also choreographed many dances. \nIn the last several years\, Maurits has been teaching often with Tineke\, and this has included workshops in Taiwan\, Hong Kong\, Singapore\, and Malaysia. His mother dances with the Ensemble Zagore. \nIn 1987\, Kotse entered the State Choreographic School (now the National School of Dance Arts) in Sofia\, graduating with a diploma as artist/ballet dancer and teacher of dance arts. He has danced as a soloist with Ensemble Zagore and the Ensemble Slănčev Brjag\, was assistant choreographer with the Ensemble Zornitsa\, and he toured with both Slănčev Brjag and Zagore in Europe\, Canada\, and the United States. \nIn 2000 Kotse emigrated to the United States and settled in the Chicago area\, where he established several Bulgarian folklore clubs that preserve and nurture Bulgarian folk dance and folklore in a dynamic way. \nKotse organizes annual festivals in Chicago that feature multiple Bulgarian folk ensembles and cultural groups under the umbrella and name of his Vereya dance ensemble. Read more… \nPetar Aleksiev – Bulgarian Music\nPetar Aleksiev \nPetar “Usmivkata” (The Smile) Aleksiev was born in Varna\, Bulgaria. He graduated from “Philip Kutev” Music School in Kotel\, then from Plovdiv’s Academy for Music and Dance Arts. He was part of the representative folk orchestra of the Plovdiv Academy. There he received his master’s degree in Music Arts with honors\, specializing in bagpipe. \nWhile he was at school Petar accompanied the world-known Grammy-winning women’s choir Le Mystère Des Voix Bulgares. He has participated in many groups in numerous projects\, and has played with the most famous musicians and bands in Bulgaria. Petar has made recordings with the Bulgarian National Radio\, and Bulgarian National Television. He has participated in many international projects\, folklore events\, and festivals in Greece\, Italy\, Malta\, Israel\, Netherlands\, Belgium\, Moldova\, Ukraine\, Serbia\, and elsewhere. D!M is a group of friends who have been playing together for well over a decade. Two bands will play: Folk Voice Band (international favorites) and Zakuska (Balkan). In addition to dancing\, there will be cake\, historical exhibits\, and more! Plan to join us for this fun evening.  \nRides will be available from the Lynnwood light rail station to the hall (and back). \nFREE! – Donations welcome! \nAbout the NFDI\nThe Northwest Folk Dancers Incorporated (NFDI)\, is the “Where to Folk Dance” organization of the Pacific Northwest. It is a non-profit “umbrella” organization that promotes folk dancing and ethnic events. \nNFDI publishes a monthly magazine\, THE NORTHWEST FOLK DANCER\, containing articles and advertisements of interest to the folk dance community. THE NORTHWEST FOLK DANCER magazine also includes listings of regular dances and classes and a separate comprehensive calendar of special events. Additional features are ethnic recipes\, dance descriptions\, club news\, and information helpful for dancers\, teachers of folk dance\, and anyone interested in the food\, dances\, costumes\, and history of other cultures. \nNFDI coordinates a workshop and international folk dance at the NW Folklife Festival and also seeks new ways to promote all forms of ethnic dance. \nNFDI provides scholarships for adults who want to attend folk dance camps and who agree to teach the dances to other NFDI clubs\, and youth scholarships for students (high school and college age) who want to participate in a dance camp but need assistance to do so. \nNFDI was incorporated in January of 1956 and is recognized by the IRS as a charitable non-profit under section 501(c)(3).

DESCRIPTION:Israeli folk dancers from all over the Bay Area dance the night away at Café Shalom’s Saturday party—a monthly tradition since the 1960s! We play a wonderful mix of oldies and the latest dances based on requests. Dancers of all ages are invited to join the fun on the third Saturday of every month.  \nSaturday classes are large parties with many dancers from all ages and spectrum. We dance dances from 1918 and from 2018 back to back. \nThe first part of the evening – 30-45 minutes starts with slow and beginners dances\, oldies\, and dances which we learn in Tuesday class.
