SUMMARY:Da! Mozhem and the Nema Problema Chorale Party
DESCRIPTION:7 – 8 pm \nKaela Fine will teach Rusi Kosi and Lucy may teach steps to Tropanka. Dancing to recorded music while the band sets up\n\n\n8 – 11 pm\nDancing to Da! Mozhem and the Nema Problema Chorale\, with musicians and singers famous in the Peninsula\n\n\nDa! Mozhem and the Nema Problema Chorale\nDa! Mozhem and the Nema Problema Chorale play and sing high-energy pan-Balkan music for the joy of dancing.  D!M is a group of friends who have been playing together for well over a decade. The chorale consists of up to eight women\, joined occasionally by male voices.  The group has veterans from many excellent folklore bands such as the People’s International Silver String Macedonian Band\, Born to Drone\, Westwind\, Sviraci\, and the Slavonian Traveling Band.  The band plays with emphasis on Bulgarian\, Macedonian\, and ex-Yugoslavetraditions.  Several members frequently travel to the Balkans to learn more about the folkloric music of the region.  The group plays on traditional instruments unique to the region as well as modern instruments. \nSnacks greatly appreciated for the Kafana — a place for chatting with friends\, snacking to get more energy for dancing and listening to the band. \nQuestions? He subsequently studied various forms of folk dance in workshops throughout Europe\, Israel\,and North America.From 1995 to 2003\, he performed as a dancer and choreographer with the Terra di Danza Dance Company and was involved in the production of Raggi di Luna Italiana (Italian dances); Giro Giro Mondo (dances from around the world);Keltic Emotion (Celtic dances); Mazal Tov (Israeli dances);and Ethnos (international folk dances). He currently organizes two dance camps in Europe: Balkanot (Balkan and Israeli dance) and Camp Yofi (Israeli dance). Each year she organizes a weekend dance camp at Mendocino Woodlands near Mendocino in Northern California\, inviting master teachers and musicians from the U.S. and abroad to be on staff. In the early 1980’s\, Marilyn began researching regional folk dances of France. Her research took her to small villages throughout the French countryside.  In the following years\, Marilyn was able to bring both dance teachers and musicians from France to teach at workshops and camps here in California. With Jaime Smith on violin\, Orestis Koletsos on bouzouki and vocals\, and Panagiotis Papageorgiou\, piano.  The trio plays a unique blend of traditional Greek music and contemporary urban riffs.  \nNote: Ring the bell at the gate to enter \nHohlax Trio\nJaime Smith grew up in Sacramento\, studied violin at the New England Conservatory of Music and studied and performed in Greece for more than a decade.  Orestis Koletsos\, born in Paris and raised in Athens\, began playing bouzouki at the age of 15 and has been performing\, recording\, and writing songs for more than a decade.  Joining Jaime and Orestis is Giannis on guitar and vocals.  Giannis was born in the village of Kiriaki\, Boeotia\, in central Greece. His earliest exposure to folk music came from his father\, who was a folk singer. This influence\, and the constant contact of the local folk bands led Giannis to  a career of singing  folk\, traditional and rembetiko songs.

DESCRIPTION:Join Kopachka Folk Dancers for Bulgarika’s first stop in the Bay Area on their national tour!  Come dance to the haunting melodies and fiery dance tempos of five master musicians\, all steeped in Bulgarian music and rhythms for a young age. \nDOWNLOAD\, print\, and share a flier. \nBulgarika\nBulgarika presents traditional Bulgarian songs and tunes. The band is led by husband and wife team\, Nikolay (gadulka\, a fiddle) and Donka Kolev (vocalist)\, award-winning performers from Folk Music Conservatories in Bulgaria. They are joined by Temelko Ivanov (kaval)\, Nikolay Kodzhabashev (tambura)\, and Marin Chalamov (tapan). \nNikolay Kolev \nNikolay Kolev (gadulka)\nNikolay Kolev is a native of the Thracian Rose Valley village of Karavelovo\, has been playing gadulka since age 10. After graduating from the National School of Folk Arts in Shiroka Luka\, Bulgaria\, he performed for three years with the Sliven Folk Dance and Music Ensemble. In 1984 he founded the orchestra “Sopot”. In 1985 he formed the wedding-music ensemble “Rozova Dolina” and in 1992 the prize-winning ensemble “Balkanski Glasove”. In 1994 and 1995 the latter group took first prizes at the Varna Festival. Nikolay has accompanied many well-known singers including Vulkana Stojanova\, Roumen Rodopski and Todor Kozhuharov. He has also taught many students at a number of Balkan camps in the U.S. In 1999\, Nikolay was the first Bulgarian to be recognized by the Slavic Heritage Council of America for his outstanding contributions to music. \nDonka Koleva \nDonka Koleva (vocals)\nDonka Koleva is a native of the village of Tuzha in the Stara Zagora region of Thrace. She graduated from the National School of Folk Arts in Shiroka Luka\, Bulgaria\, and performed for three years with the Sliven Folk Dance and Music Ensemble. She was director of the Folk Song Chorus of Sopot\, has been a featured soloist on Bulgarian Radio-TV\, has participated in numerous singing competitions in Bulgaria and Europe and has been featured on numerous recordings. In 1997 her recording of Javore was named “Song of the Year” in the Bulgarian national radio competition. Since immigrating to the U.S. she has taught and performed widely across N. America\, both privately and at numerous camps\, festivals and other events. In addition to her vocal talents Donka serves as Bulgarika’s manager and has organized 12 national tours for the bands Kabile’\, Cherven Traktor\, Bulgarika and the Kolev Family Ensemble. \nTemelko Ivanov \nTemelko Ivanov (kaval)\nTemelko Ivanov\, a native of Burgas on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast\, has devoted himself to the Bulgarian shepherd’s flute\, kaval\, since he was in elementary school. He received degrees at the Philip Koutev National School of Music and Dance in Kotel and the Plovdiv Academy of Music\, Dance\, and Fine Arts\, graduating from both schools with honors. Temelko’s career is closely connected with Bulgaria’s distinguished kaval masters\, including Nikola Ganchev\, Dragan Karapchanski\, and Stoyan Velichkov. In addition to his work with Ensemble Trakiya\, Temelko has performed and recorded with many other folk music orchestras\, including Cosmic Voices and Ensemble Bulgare; and has worked with numerous independent projects and singers. He has been a member of the Sliven Folk Dance and Music Ensemble since 2001\, where he is featured as an ensemble and solo tambura player. Nikolay has also played tambura and guitar with numerous other ensembles throughout Bulgaria\, including the Perla\, Slivenci\, Kabile\, and Straldzha folk bands; and has accompanied many renowned musicians and singers such as Teodosii Spassov\, Dechka Slaninova\, Vanya Valkova\, and others. He has also recorded extensively on Bulgarian National Radio and Television and other venues\, and has participated in many concert tours throughout Europe. DESCRIPTION:Come join the Petaluma Snap-Y Dancers in Petaluma for a special Folk Dance Party with live Bulgarian music by the Bulgarika Ensemble\, featuring four master musicians. Bulgarika Ensemble consists of Nikolay Kolev on gadulka\, Donka Koleva on vocals\, Temelko Ivanov on kaval\, and Nikolay Kodzhabashev on tambura. Everyone is welcome to come dance and/or just listen to the fabulous music.  \nDOWNLOAD\, print\, and share a flier. \nBulgarika\nNikolay Kolev \nNikolay Kolev (gadulka)\nNikolay Kolev is a native of the Thracian Rose Valley village of Karavelovo\, has been playing gadulka since age 10. After graduating from the National School of Folk Arts in Shiroka Luka\, Bulgaria\, he performed for three years with the Sliven Folk Dance and Music Ensemble. In 1984 he founded the orchestra “Sopot”. In 1985 he formed the wedding-music ensemble “Rozova Dolina” and in 1992 the prize-winning ensemble “Balkanski Glasove”. In 1994 and 1995 the latter group took first prizes at the Varna Festival. Nikolay has accompanied many well-known singers including Vulkana Stojanova\, Roumen Rodopski and Todor Kozhuharov. He has also taught many students at a number of Balkan camps in the U.S. In 1999\, Nikolay was the first Bulgarian to be recognized by the Slavic Heritage Council of America for his outstanding contributions to music. \nDonka Koleva \nDonka Koleva (vocals)\nDonka Koleva is a native of the village of Tuzha in the Stara Zagora region of Thrace. She graduated from the National School of Folk Arts in Shiroka Luka\, Bulgaria\, and performed for three years with the Sliven Folk Dance and Music Ensemble. She was director of the Folk Song Chorus of Sopot\, has been a featured soloist on Bulgarian Radio-TV\, has participated in numerous singing competitions in Bulgaria and Europe and has been featured on numerous recordings. In 1997 her recording of Javore was named “Song of the Year” in the Bulgarian national radio competition. Since immigrating to the U.S. she has taught and performed widely across N. America\, both privately and at numerous camps\, festivals and other events. In addition to her vocal talents Donka serves as Bulgarika’s manager and has organized 12 national tours for the bands Kabile’\, Cherven Traktor\, Bulgarika and the Kolev Family Ensemble. \nTemelko Ivanov  \nTemelko Ivanov (kaval)\nTemelko Ivanov\, a native of Burgas on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast\, has devoted himself to the Bulgarian shepherd’s flute\, kaval\, since he was in elementary school. SUMMARY:Croatian Heritage Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Croatian Heritage Festival (formerly the Marko Polo Festival) is a celebration of Croatian music\, dance\, food\, and heritage. \nMarko Polo\, the famed Croatian explorer\, was born on the island of Korcula\, off the Dalmatian coast of Croatia. To highlight his achievements as one of the men to open the Far East to trade\, the Slavonic Cultural Center celebrates an annual Marko Polo Day in October with a festival of Croatian and international music\, dance\, and ethnic food.  \nThe Sinovi Tamburitza Orchestra of Seattle will perform Croatian music throughout the day. There will be performances by the Slavonian Traveling Band\, Sidro Tamburitza Orchestra\, and Koraci Croatian Folk Ensemble. Workshops will be held in Croatian kolo dancing and singing: John Morovich will teach kolo dance and Lilla Serlegi will teach Croatian singing.
