DESCRIPTION:June Camp\, a mainstay of the Midwest international folk dance community\, welcomes dancers from all over the U.S.A. and beyond! We especially pride ourselves on welcoming globally-known dancers and this year Tineke and Maurits van Geel will be our featured guests.  \nSee you at June Camp! \nTineke van Geel\nTineke van Geel Tineke van Geel received her degree as folk dance instructor in 1977. She specializes in Armenian dance and works as a teacher and choreographer. Since 1985\, she has regularly visited Armenia to study folklore at the Pedagogic Institute and Choreographic School in Yerevan. Part of each research trip was devoted to working with several amateur groups in Armenia and doing research on costumes. Two of those research trips were supported by scholarships of the Dutch government. On several occasions\, Tineke visited the United States to observe the dances performed by the Armenian communities there. \nTineke conducts workshops for students at various levels\, beginning to professional\, and has taught classes in international folk dance\, Dutch and Armenian dances in many countries of the world\, a fact that didn’t remain unnoticed in Armenia. In 2006\, she received an award from the Armenian government for her extraordinary devotion and energy in promoting Armenian dance\, music and culture. All her research in Armenia has made her a world-renown specialist of Armenian dance. \nIn addition to a pleasant sense of humor\, Tineke is an excellent teacher who can break down dance patterns step by step to enable every student to master the dances and to experience the joy of both learning and executing this exciting material. Combined with a vast knowledge of Armenian dance and culture\, these qualities have contributed to her worldwide success and popularity. Besides giving workshops in 14 European countries\, she has taught in the United States\, Canada\, Australia\, New Zealand\, Taiwan\, Hong Kong\, Singapore\, Malaysia and Japan. \nThe music for a large number of dances that were researched in Armenia had never been recorded. Therefore\, Tineke invited bands from Armenia to make recordings in a Dutch studio and she produced a number of compact discs on her own Van Geel Records label\, established in 1989. Recently these programs have also been made available on DVD. \nTineke has also conducted over 40 successful dance and culture tours to Armenia which have been attended by hundreds of participants from all over the world. Recently Georgia was also included in some tour programs. \nAlthough Tineke is known as an Armenian dance specialist\, she is sometimes asked to teach international folk dances because she has mastered a variety of styles and learned from many master teachers. \nMaurits van Geel\nMaurits van Geel  Maurits van Geel holds a degree in Arts and Crafts and Art History. He graduated as a folk dance teacher in 1977 and received his degree at Dance Academy level from the Ministry of Culture in 1986. He taught at folk dance clubs in Amsterdam and worked as a dance consultant for the City Council 1986-1988\, initiating dance projects in schools in combination with setting up dance projects and festivals. Also in the 1980s\, he specialized in the Appalachian clogging\, worked as guest teacher in Belgium\, The Netherlands\, and Germany\, and was invited to be a guest teacher at the Rotterdam Dance Academy. \nHe was employed by Het Internationaal Danstheater\, a professional dance company in Amsterdam\, first as choreographer and later as artistic director for 23 years (1988-2011). During his career\, he produced over 47 theatre programs in the field of world dance for this company. Part of this job involved several months of dance research each year in order to prepare for these programs. His travels have included India\, Pakistan\, Turkey\, Russia\, Armenia\, Azerbaijan\, Georgia\, and Cherkassy\, among many other countries. His archive consists of almost 900 DVDs\, with research material from all over the world\, most of it recorded by himself. He has also choreographed folk dances\, among them Syrtós Kitrínou\, Shantel\, and Tou Paradeisou Lemonia. \nSince 2011\, Maurits has been teaching dance\, often with his wife Tineke. They have traveled to many European countries\, New Zealand\, Australia\, Taiwan\, Hong Kong\, Singapore and Malaysia\, and were guest teachers at a number of folk dance camps and workshops in North America. \nIn November 2017\, Willem-Alexander\, King of the Netherlands\, appointed Maurits Knight in the Order of Oranje-Nassau for his extensive contribution to dance. \nDance Exchange\nPrograms such as the Dance Exchange give local teachers opportunities to shine. The Dance Exchange is a program of brief reviews by advance request\, of classic old dances that you can’t quite remember – or ones from past June Camps that have slipped away. Participants submit suggestions and our committee finds local teachers who can present them. You can get a sense of the range of dances that have been included in the past by looking at this list. SUMMARY:Fall Camp 2022
DESCRIPTION:Fall Camp promises to be another vibrant\, fun-filled weekend. Once again\, camp will be on the Brandeis-Bardin Campus near Simi Valley (40 miles northwest of downtown LA)\, with a delightful combination of creature comforts (such as motel-style rooms) and a beautiful rural setting.  \nFall Camp 2022 will feature master teachers Steve Kotansky and Roberto Bagnoli. In addition to their regular teaching of great new dances\, each will teach additional sessions of fun but less challenging dances. This will appeal both to people who want to learn as much as possible from them and to those who are may be interested in other camp activities and want some light teaching sessions.  \nFor the first time\, one of Fall Camp’s dance rooms will be air conditioned and have a wood floor. Camp will offer many attractions\, including dance parties\, happy hours\, the opportunity to participate in Terry’s “potluck band\,” craft projects (including decorating T-shirts with Sandy)\, morning stretches with Mady\, morning nature walks with Jan\, star gazing with Marc\, and more.  \nIn the interest of the well-being of all campers (and others)\, all participants must provide proof of full vaccination and boosts. He started dancing at the age of 8\, and hasn’t stopped since then. He performed with Dado Kraus’s troupe and danced at sessions led by Meir Shem-Tov\, Shuki Terem\, and Beber Shushan. Just after completing his military service\, he opened his first harkada in 1995 in Karmiel\, followed by Mayaan Tzvi and Misgav. Today\, he runs five weekly sessions\, marthons\, special events\, and an annual trip to Masada\, as well as having been a guest teacher at camps all over the world for more than 20 years! \nChen Blum brings unparalleled energy and impeccable style to the dance floor. Born in Israel\, he began folk dancing at age 7\, and he danced with Dado Kraus\, Shlomo Maman\, Yonaton Karmon\, and others\, but he soon entered the world of professional dance. After high school\, he studied with the Contemporary Ballet of Caracas\, Venezuela\, subsequently performing with the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company and in professional productions\, such as the Cameri Theather’s The Producers. Today\, he lives in Santiago\, where he directs the local folk dance department and Camp Chile Rokedet. He is the choreographer of Ivdu Et Hashem Besimcha\, Kol Paamonim\, and more. \nLatishya Steele returns as our Mistress of the Computer\, our Granter of Requests\, our Voice Upon the Microphone — in other words\, our incomparable DJ. She will keep you on your feet all night long — and well into the morning! Latishya started her dancing career in Boston and Chicago\, and she is now one of the Bay Area’s favorite teachers and programmers\, with an incredibly deep repertoire and a talent for keeping the party going. \nAaron Alpert is your camp director and host for the weekend. DESCRIPTION:If you’re like us\, you would love a wonderful weekend of dancing with friendly people in a scenic location.  We are planning a real (not virtual) Fall Camp November 12-14\, 2021\, at the beautiful Brandeis-Bardin Campus near Simi Valley. Share the joy of dancing safely together again! Everyone will have had the opportunity to be vaccinated long before then\, and we all hope the health situation will allow a Fall Camp without masks or social distancing.  \nMaster teachers include Sonia Dion and Cristian Florescu\, who will bring their uniquely entertaining teaching of Romanian dances\, and Roberto Bagnoli who will present a great selection of international dances.  \nRegistration available this summer! Cristian and Sonia have been guest performers with the Collage International Dance Ensemble of Boston\, were regular teachers at l’École supérieure de danse du Québec\, and were selected to be part of the Artists in the Schools program sponsored by the Québec Ministry of Education. In recent years\, they have developed a specific interest in working with recreational folk dance groups and have traveled all over the world to share their love of Romanian folk traditions. \nCristian was born in Bucharest\, Romania. He started dancing in 1982 with different Romanian folk ensembles\, and studied with various specialists including the renowned Theodor Vasilescu. Cristian was principal dancer with the National Ensemble Cununa Carpatilor with whom he toured extensively in Europe\, Asia and North America. In 1990-91\, the Romanian Ministry of Culture and the ACAFR conferred on him a certificate as recognized solo dancer and choreographer in the field of folklore. He also was chief répétiteur for the Folk Ensemble Balada in Romania and worked as choreographer for the Academic Ensemble Joc in Moldova. In 1993\, he joined Les Sortilèges\, a professional folk dance company based in Montreal with whom he was actively involved as a dancer\, teacher\, répétiteur and choreographer until 2003. Since coming to Canada\, Cristian has acquired multiple skills in various dance forms including modern dance\, ballroom\, jazz\, tap as well as French-Canadian clogging and Irish step dancing. \nSonia was born in Québec and has been a professional dancer for many years. She was lead dancer and choreographer for Les Sortilèges dance company\, Canada’s oldest professional folk dance ensemble\, with whom she developed several new productions including Une page d’histoire\, Un pas de danse\, Montréal en danse\, and Pour se faire plaisir. He subsequently studied various forms of folk dance in workshops throughout Europe\, Israel\,and North America.From 1995 to 2003\, he performed as a dancer and choreographer with the Terra di Danza Dance Company and was involved in the production of Raggi di Luna Italiana (Italian dances); Giro Giro Mondo (dances from around the world);Keltic Emotion (Celtic dances); Mazal Tov (Israeli dances);and Ethnos (international folk dances). He currently organizes two dance camps in Europe: Balkanot (Balkan and Israeli dance) and Camp Yofi (Israeli dance). Roberto has lectured and conducted workshops throughout Europe as well as on numerous occasions in North America\, Taiwan\, Hong Kong\, Singapore and Japan.  \nRoberto teaches weekly classes in various cities in the north of Italy and conducts monthly sessions in Rome and Milan besides conducting workshops and seminars throughout Europe\, the United States (notably the Stockton Folk Dance Camp)\, and Canada\, Taiwan\, Hong Kong\, Singapore\, and Japan. That’s why the new Fall Dance Camp is planned for Nov. 15-17\, 2019. \nFall Camp’s first year promises to be a great one. We will have master teachers Erica Goldman (Israeli) and Caspar Bik (international\, with emphasis on dances from around the Black Sea). We will also teach some Stockton dances. In addition\, of course\, there will be plenty of other dancing as well as other activities\, including opportunities for campers who want to play instruments or sing in a “potluck band\,” a popular poetry workshop\, morning hikes around the lovely rural campus\, and more. \nThe camp is about 40 miles northwest of Los Angeles\, near Simi Valley\, at the Brandeis-Bardin Campus of American Jewish University. We will stay in motel-style rooms with private baths\, enjoy five meals from Friday dinner through Sunday breakfast (there is an optional Sunday lunch)\, and dance on a wood floor. \nYou get all this and more for $225 (triple occupancy)\, $325 (double occupancy)\, or $440 (single occupancy). While a student at Brandeis University in Boston\, she performed with several area Israeli dance troupes and was the director of B’yachad (the university’s student group) and Sa’adya. She branched out into other kinds of folk dance as a member and choreographer of the Mandala Folkdance Ensemble.  \nErica was a principal dancer with the highly acclaimed Collage Dance Ensemble for a few years and competed with them at the Golden Karagõz Folk Dance Competition in Turkey in 2003. \nIn 2004\, Erica spent the summer as the dance director of Camp Alonim at the Brandeis-Bardin Institute\, a Jewish overnight camp where Israeli dancing is truly an obsession among the campers. She was hooked; after working for nearly eight years for a software company in Boston\, she quit her job and moved to Los Angeles and has been teaching Israeli dance full-time ever since. When she got to Los Angeles\, she immediately joined the Keshet Chaim Dance Ensemble and danced with that Israeli performance company for about eight years. Read more \nCaspar Bik\nCaspar Bik Caspar Bik was born in 1990 in the Netherlands. He was an active dancer from a young age in groups that presented Dutch dances as well as groups that showed international dances. Caspar graduated in 2013 as a dance teacher at the dance academy Codarts in Rotterdam. Besides folk dancing\, Caspar has experience in modern/contemporary dance\, classical ballet\, jazz dance\, ballroom\, and tap dance. Since his graduation he has been teaching different dance styles to children\, teenagers\, and adults at amateur and professional levels. In 2014\, he founded a youth school for theater arts which performs a stage musical every year for which Caspar creates the choreography. Both as a folk dance instructor and as a choreographer he has taught courses in Belgium\, Germany\, Switzerland and Turkey\, Taiwan and the USA. Caspar has been specializing in folk dances from countries around the Black Sea. During his research in Georgia\, he trained with the professional ensemble Erisioni and traveled through the country to experience the colorful variety and beauty of Georgian dance\, song and music.
