From 1988 to 1993\, she danced with the Filip Kutev Bulgarian National Folk Ensemble. She studied dance ethnology in Bulgaria and obtained her Ph.D. in dance from Dortmund University (Germany). She regularly commutes between Bulgaria\, where she heads the Ethnochoreology Department at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences\, and Germany\, where she is Professor of Dance at Folkwang University in Essen. \nShe graduated in Dance Pedagogy\, Ethnochoreology\, Choreography and Direction (Bulgaria)\, and Kinetography and Communicative Sciences (Germany) and has completed a Doctorate with “Summa cum laude” and awarded the prize “Dissertation 2004” from the Technical University of Dortmund (Germany) in the area of Cultural Philosophy. The title of her thesis is “Dance after Perestroika. The Communication between Eastern and Western Europe through the Bulgarian Folkdances.” Gergana qualified in Ethnochoreology and Communication in 2011 in Sofia. \nShe performed as a solo dancer and choreographer at the National Ensemble for Folksongs and Folkdances (Philip Koutev) in Sofia from 1988 to 1994\, was a Choreographer for different Bulgarian and international Theater Projects\, was a Senior Fellow and Associate Professor for Ethnochoreology at the Institute for Art Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Sofia\, and has lectured at the Technical University of Dortmund\, the Humboldt University\, Berlin\, the University in Zurich\, the University of Music\, Vienna\, and the New Bulgarian University\, Sofia. \nStarting in 1994\, she has conducted over 300 seminars and summer academies in folk dances in Argentina\, Austria\, Belgium\, Brazil\, Bulgaria\, Canada\, Denmark\, France\, Germany\, Holland\, Israel\, Japan\, Norway\, Switzerland\, and the United States. \nShe has published numerous articles and has written two books on various aspects of Bulgarian traditional dance. Read more… \nSteve Kotansky\nSteve Kotansky Steve Kotansky has an extensive knowledge of the cultures behind the dances he teaches. Beginning in the early 1970s\, Steve made many research trips to Romania\, the former Yugoslavia\, Hungary\, Greece\, and Albania. He and his wife\, Susan\, have taught at many major folk dance camps in the USA and Europe. \nIn the late 1970s\, Steve returned to Hungary and studied with dance master\, Timár Sándor\, among others. Steve has taught at every major North American festival and camp\, often with his wife\, Susy. Their work continues to be an expression of their love and passion for dance\, finding time to teach dance to children K-12 in New York City area public and private schools. Steve also serves as a consultant to several Hungarian folk ensembles. Most recently\, Steve has been researching Albanian and Roma dance from the Diaspora and continues his work and research in Balkan and Central European countries. Read more… \nComfort\nFall Camp\, nestled in a woodsy alcove near Simi Valley\, is a lovely place where you can enjoy being close to nature while still having the creature comforts of excellent meals (upgraded from previous years)\, motel-style rooms (with private bathrooms\, heat\, and air conditioning)\, and more. You can dance when you feel like it\, and when you don’t\, do other things such as catching up with friends\, playing Scrabble\, working on a jigsaw puzzle with others\, getting a massage\, completing a craft project\, going for a walk in nature\, reading a good book\, meditating\, or doing nothing at all. You don’t have to get on a plane or drive treacherous mountain roads to be with nature\, and WiFi is available too! \nFall Camp will no longer require masks or vaccinations\, but we still encourage best health practices. Because the fall weather is so difficult to predict\, we are doing all of our dancing in a beautiful\, heated and air-conditioned building\, where many of our other activities will also take place. Although we are installing the largest wood floor possible to fit the dance room\, it is smaller than the largest room we used in previous years\, so we are limiting the number of campers to around 60. This also means that dancers will have more access to our two master teachers. The dining menu has been upgraded in quality\, and Sunday lunch is included in the registration price. There will be two happy hours with wine. \nDance\nFall Camp is also a great place for those who are serious about learning all the dances presented on Friday and Saturday by Gergana and Steve. She specializes in Armenian dance and works as a teacher and choreographer. Since 1985\, she has regularly visited Armenia to study folklore at the Pedagogic Institute and Choreographic School in Yerevan. Part of each research trip was devoted to working with several amateur groups in Armenia and doing research on costumes. Two of those research trips were supported by scholarships of the Dutch government. On several occasions\, Tineke visited the United States to observe the dances performed by the Armenian communities there. \nTineke conducts workshops for students at various levels\, beginning to professional\, and has taught classes in international folk dance\, Dutch and Armenian dances in many countries of the world\, a fact that didn’t remain unnoticed in Armenia. In 2006\, she received an award from the Armenian government for her extraordinary devotion and energy in promoting Armenian dance\, music and culture. All her research in Armenia has made her a world-renown specialist of Armenian dance. \nIn addition to a pleasant sense of humor\, Tineke is an excellent teacher who can break down dance patterns step by step to enable every student to master the dances and to experience the joy of both learning and executing this exciting material. Combined with a vast knowledge of Armenian dance and culture\, these qualities have contributed to her worldwide success and popularity. Besides giving workshops in 14 European countries\, she has taught in the United States\, Canada\, Australia\, New Zealand\, Taiwan\, Hong Kong\, Singapore\, Malaysia and Japan. \nThe music for a large number of dances that were researched in Armenia had never been recorded. Therefore\, Tineke invited bands from Armenia to make recordings in a Dutch studio and she produced a number of compact discs on her own Van Geel Records label\, established in 1989. Recently these programs have also been made available on DVD. \nTineke has also conducted over 40 successful dance and culture tours to Armenia which have been attended by hundreds of participants from all over the world. Recently Georgia was also included in some tour programs. \nAlthough Tineke is known as an Armenian dance specialist\, she is sometimes asked to teach international folk dances because she has mastered a variety of styles and learned from many master teachers. \nMaurits van Geel\nMaurits van Geel Maurits van Geel holds a degree in Arts and Crafts and Art History. He graduated as a folk dance teacher in 1977 and received his degree at Dance Academy level from the Ministry of Culture in 1986. He taught at folk dance clubs in Amsterdam and worked as a dance consultant for the City Council 1986-1988\, initiating dance projects in schools in combination with setting up dance projects and festivals. Also in the 1980s\, he specialized in the Appalachian clogging\, worked as guest teacher in Belgium\, The Netherlands\, and Germany\, and was invited to be a guest teacher at the Rotterdam Dance Academy. \nHe was employed by Het Internationaal Danstheater\, a professional dance company in Amsterdam\, first as choreographer and later as artistic director for 23 years (1988-2011). During his career\, he produced over 47 theatre programs in the field of world dance for this company. Part of this job involved several months of dance research each year in order to prepare for these programs. His travels have included India\, Pakistan\, Turkey\, Russia\, Armenia\, Azerbaijan\, Georgia\, and Cherkassy\, among many other countries. His archive consists of almost 900 DVDs\, with research material from all over the world\, most of it recorded by himself. He has also choreographed folk dances\, among them Syrtós Kitrínou\, Shantel\, and Tou Paradeisou Lemonia. \nSince 2011\, Maurits has been teaching dance\, often with his wife Tineke. He started dancing at the age of 8\, and hasn’t stopped since then. He performed with Dado Kraus’s troupe and danced at sessions led by Meir Shem-Tov\, Shuki Terem\, and Beber Shushan. Just after completing his military service\, he opened his first harkada in 1995 in Karmiel\, followed by Mayaan Tzvi and Misgav. Today\, he runs five weekly sessions\, marthons\, special events\, and an annual trip to Masada\, as well as having been a guest teacher at camps all over the world for more than 20 years! \nChen Blum brings unparalleled energy and impeccable style to the dance floor. Cristian and Sonia have been guest performers with the Collage International Dance Ensemble of Boston\, were regular teachers at l’École supérieure de danse du Québec\, and were selected to be part of the Artists in the Schools program sponsored by the Québec Ministry of Education. In recent years\, they have developed a specific interest in working with recreational folk dance groups and have traveled all over the world to share their love of Romanian folk traditions. \nCristian was born in Bucharest\, Romania. He started dancing in 1982 with different Romanian folk ensembles\, and studied with various specialists including the renowned Theodor Vasilescu. Cristian was principal dancer with the National Ensemble Cununa Carpatilor with whom he toured extensively in Europe\, Asia and North America. In 1990-91\, the Romanian Ministry of Culture and the ACAFR conferred on him a certificate as recognized solo dancer and choreographer in the field of folklore. He also was chief répétiteur for the Folk Ensemble Balada in Romania and worked as choreographer for the Academic Ensemble Joc in Moldova. In 1993\, he joined Les Sortilèges\, a professional folk dance company based in Montreal with whom he was actively involved as a dancer\, teacher\, répétiteur and choreographer until 2003. Since coming to Canada\, Cristian has acquired multiple skills in various dance forms including modern dance\, ballroom\, jazz\, tap as well as French-Canadian clogging and Irish step dancing. \nSonia was born in Québec and has been a professional dancer for many years. She was lead dancer and choreographer for Les Sortilèges dance company\, Canada’s oldest professional folk dance ensemble\, with whom she developed several new productions including Une page d’histoire\, Un pas de danse\, Montréal en danse\, and Pour se faire plaisir. Sonia has toured worldwide and has been exposed to a wide range of dance techniques including Romanian folk dance\, Scottish highland dancing\, French-Canadian clogging and ballroom.\n More details… \nRoberto Bagnoli\nRoberto Bagnoli Roberto Bagnoli grew up in Rome\, where he was first introduced to folk music and dance\, eventually taking part in several performances and teaching dance classes. He subsequently studied various forms of folk dance in workshops throughout Europe\, Israel\,and North America.From 1995 to 2003\, he performed as a dancer and choreographer with the Terra di Danza Dance Company and was involved in the production of Raggi di Luna Italiana (Italian dances); Giro Giro Mondo (dances from around the world);Keltic Emotion (Celtic dances); Mazal Tov (Israeli dances);and Ethnos (international folk dances). He currently organizes two dance camps in Europe: Balkanot (Balkan and Israeli dance) and Camp Yofi (Israeli dance).
