COUNCIL OFFICERS
PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
President Barry Moore
At the most
beautiful time of year in Sacramento we are reminded once
again of how temporary our lives are here on earth. The mixed
emotions I feel have been heightened by my tenure as council
president. Last evening as a group of about 20 people gathered
at YLI for an evening of BBKM celebrating the flower power of
the 60’s and 70’s, I was told about the passing away of Leona
Faoro. Though some of us are relative newcomers to Sacramento
folk dance, the
impact of the loss of long time members is great. For me it
was one of the more special BBKM’s.
Remember the Garden Valley event coming up April
25th, where Nevada City’s Village Folk Orkestra will play. I
hope many from the Sacramento area come up to the foothills to
support the Garden Valley group. Consider carpooling.
On May 10th there are several events happening
in Sacramento area. One is the Israeli Dance Shabbaton
sponsored by the Jewish Federation of the Sacramento Region.
This event is to be held at Red Lion Hotel Sacramento at Arden
Village. There will be a full program of dance sessions led by
Loui Tucker and Binh Au. Saturday night will have an Israeli
dance party. For
more info call 916-486-0906.
That same evening a small group of us will meet
at the Wolterbeeks to watch a very ethnically rich DVD of
Ukrainians living among Hungarians and Rumanians in the
Carpathian Mountains. The movie’s title is Shadows of
Forgotten Ancestors. There are many folk traditions presented
throughout the film, transporting one to life in this region
100 years ago. If interested, contact Teddy about joining us
around 7:30 p.m. The president of the Ukrainian Heritage Club
and his wife may attend and give additional insight into what
we are seeing.
On May 17th at John Morse Waldorf Methods School
a workshop with live music to be coordinated by Roy Butler
will occur from 3 to 4 pm. Music will be provided by Katherine
Mandella, musician associate of Bob Wren of the World Music
Ensemble. This is a great chance to show support for
international folk dance with a very receptive audience. Some
of us attended last year and remember significant audience
participation.
I want to thank all of those who have done so
much to encourage the continuation of the folk arts, once
again. You are all our local treasures. It is through your
efforts that we are still thriving. I wish I could find the
time to attend more of these events.
Barry (Barry Moore, President of Sacramento
International Folk Dance and Arts Council)
