Our First HonoreesBarry Moore presents the “Plaque-book
|

This year 2009 was the first for a new tradition which at the suggestion of Bruce Mitchell, the Board of Directors implemented. It was the Honor Roll “Plaque-book”. The Board realized that we have in our midst many dancers and contributors to Sacramento Folk Dancing, who deserve to be acknowledged for their years of inspiration, organization, and leadership. This year we recognized Irene Oxford and Oscar Faoro. At first we thought about giving them a plaque with their names engraved on brass plates. But then we realized that we have no place to hang a plaque. So we thought about making a scrapbook, and adding to it every year. It could be displayed at Camellia Festival, and any other time we wanted it. Then we got brilliant and invented the “Plaque-book”, which combines both. Vick Vickland created wooden covers for the book with space for the name plates. It is very clever and unique. It was decided that the “Plaque-book” would only be presented to living dancers.
The book was presented to Irene and Oscar at the beginning of the Sunday Concert. They both managed to be there, even though Oscar had quite recently been fitted with a new heart valve, and Irene was in a “walking cast” after having broken her foot! But in typical form, those little problems didn’t stop them from coming to the special event, and being congratulated by some of the many, many dancers who have known and loved them over the years.
